Instructions for Writing Research Paper/Talk Commentaries

1. Read the assigned paper or attend the assigned talk. For papers, you should read a majority of the text and scan all of it. And you should spend some time on the context of the paper, e.g., following interesting citations, searching for related commercial software tools or looking for other papers by the author.

2. Comments should be posted on the Internet Systems Research Paper blog. Do not post a new entry in the blog, just comment on the posts, which will all be papers assigned in class. Add one or more comments, of a paragraph or more, for each of the following:

a. Summary of the paper/talk

b. Description of some interesting idea in the paper/talk.

c. Description of  the papers/tools that are cited in the paper/talk. Be sure and link to the cited paper.

d. Description of the papers that cite the read paper (inward links). Be sure and link to the citing paper.

e. Commentary about the author(s) of the paper you chose. For what university or company do they work? What is there home page? What software have they developed? Do they have some other papers that are interesting? Who are their colleagues?

f. An idea for a system/algorithm that the paper/talk inspired in you.

3. Cut and paste all of your entries into a document, print the document out, and turn in to Dr. Wolber at the beginning of each class session.
